Lindsey Rose Black isn’t quite ready to let go of a sinking relationship in her debut single, “Clutch,” a darkly compelling pop number produced by John Velasquez (Zella Day) and Matthew Frazier (Local Natives), but the Dallas-born, Los Angeles-based artist knows the end is near. “Lean into me / breathe where I breathe,” she pleads over bold beats and an even bolder bassline in the spooky, sensuous tune, totally aware of the fact that the party is over.
“’Clutch’ is about knowing in your gut that a relationship is doomed, but desperately clinging to it for one more hit of pleasure while you can,” Black says. “Intuition is such a profound wisdom in all of us, but a buzzkill to say the least when you’re not ready to accept the truth about a relationship. ‘Clutch’ takes this concept to the extreme, anthropomorphizing intuition as a relentless monster that, try as we might, we can’t outrun.”
The video for “Clutch,” directed by Erik Shute, captures Black dancing in a bright, airy loft. It doesn’t take long for her all-white outfit to become the canvas for a cathartic splatter-paint session. Meanwhile, her dancing — choreographed by Evan Sagadencky — only gets more and more uninhibited as the song progresses.
Black — a onetime actress who appeared in the 2008 season of the Disney Channel’s “As the Bell Rings” and in the 2012 film “16-Love” — is currently prepping her debut EP, “Subterra,” which is slated for release this summer.
