From rock to pop, here’s some good 2/22 viewing: New videos from Momma, SASAMI and Mehro.
MOMMA, “Rockstar”
Momma might have decamped to Brooklyn after their formative years in L.A., but they’re back at the Echo in the video for their rocktastic new single, “Rockstar.” Directed by the L.A. duo Batshit! (Ben Joyner and Henry Drayton) and reading like a mini-biopic, the video finds Momma — Allegra Weingarten, Etta Friedman and Aron Kobayashi Ritch — in the middle of a Battle of the Bands. “Etta and I wanted to write a song about making it big, and becoming rockstars,” Weingarten says. “We didn’t want to take anything too seriously, lyrically or musically. We just wanted the song to sound big. We thought it would be cool to have our own little rockumentary condensed in a 3-minute music video. It’s also kind of like a manifestation — I think we shamelessly want all of these things to happen in our careers.” The single is the follow-up to November’s “Medicine.” Momma will be opening for Wet Leg at the sold-out show March 30 at the Fonda Theatre.
SASAMI, “Make It Right”
Sasami Ashworth continues to reveal the many dimensions of her sophomore album, “Squeeze,” which comes out this Friday. Singles such as “Say It,” “The Greatest” and “Skin a Rat” showed her metal side; “Call Me Home” pivoted to dreamy folk-rock. Today brings some indie-rock middle ground in the way of “Make It Right,” along with a stylish video directed by Euphoria costume designer Heidi Bivens. “I love a fuzzy riff. Need more guitar riffs in 2022,” SASAMI says of the song. “The video is a collaboration with some of my good friends and style icons Heidi Bivens, Angelina Vitto, Alexandra French and a whole team of absolute legends. Heidi has an incredible eye for beauty, shapes and mystery.” Yes … but two SASAMIs? One of her, at least, will headline the Teragram Ballroom on April 13 (tickets).
MEHRO, “Like You’re God”
Singer-songwriter Mehro — who with his “Sky on Fire” EP and other singles had a huge 2021 — continues to get a lot out of a little. His new single “Like You’re God” is a come-on with typically spare instrumentation, a frolicking beat and cooed vocals. “Let me get you / out of them baggy clothes,” he purrs before going into full-worship mode. “This song speaks into existence a side of me that I don’t share with most people,” he says. “I am very private. So this song feels particularly gut-wrenching to release. I feel exposed, vulnerable and nervous. That’s how I know I need to let it go.” He co-directed the video with Ryan Calavano — quick-cut to the godlike pop singer, laying it all out there.
