Jenny O. took flight at The Airliner as the singer-songwriter warmed up for an August tour that will take her flying across the pond. The set mainly consisted of songs that will be included in an upcoming album, including the newly released single, “Prism.” Her new music has hints of soul and jazz mixed in with her folk tunes. The song “Natural” had a touch of Sade while a short intro piece had the feel of a Take 6 a cappella song.

Before starting off her set, Jenny O. spent time making sure all the guitar and microphone cables were in perfect order around her, showing intense concentration to make sure everything was just perfect. It was as if she knew what was likely to happen. And after the first song, as her feet were entangled in cables, she told the laughing audience, “I’m in a big knot already.”

Jenny O.’s music takes you on a relationship tour with songs such as “Lazy Jane” from her 2013 album “Automechanic” and the new “Prism.” “Lazy Jane” had the audience feeling the emotions behind the lyrics “I’m never gonna be a cheerleader / I’m never gonna be a pro-skater / I’m feeling blue / Cause I can’t have you / I’m still crying for you.” “Prism” had the audience swaying to the lyrics “Let me be your magnifier, and meet you higher / A reciprocal spirit.” As the set — which featured backing vocals from Natalie Carol of Valley Queen and Mackenzie Howe of Pet Dress — came to a close, she told the audience, “It’s been three years [since her last show], but I still don’t have anything to say.” The lyrics say differently.

Opening up the night was Sharon Silva of The Wild Reeds. How does she come up with material for her songs? The answer, stop signs, “I was driving one day and the rest is history.” And how does she react when missing the final beat to a song, “Shit.” Mix it all together and it got the crowd out early to catch her set.

Jenny O.’s setlist: Big Cheese, Lazy Jane, Pleasure, Natural, Prism, There is a Club, Solitary Girl, Golden
