Raise your hand if you’ve ever been the socially awkward — and by that we mean paralyzed — person immortalized in Winnetka Bowling League’s new single.
“I Like to Hide in the Bathroom at Parties” is the latest from songwriter Matthew Kona, who’s shown spates of indie-pop genius on four EPs, most recently February’s “Pulp.” The new single finds him writing with the Knocks and Madison Love on a bass-driven bop with lyrics that just roll along.
“Ben [Ruttner] from the Knocks and I were working on a record at the time for another artist and decided it was time for the dads to reunite and put out a song,” Kona says. “We wrote it in Ben’s mom’s basement where she let him set up these bunk beds after his girlfriend broke up with him. We both experience wild social anxiety but pursued lives that require being somewhat social … so it made sense to dive in on this one together. Madison Love babysat us and gave us words to say to sound cool.”
So from us to you, one question: Are you done in there yet?
