Stream: Winter, ‘Lose You’

Samira Winter seemed to float into Los Angeles on cumulus clouds of delay, synth and guitar when she moved here from Boston back in 2014. Her ’90s-indebted dream-pop, not to mention charisma, cast an angelic presence on those who witnessed.

And there she remains on the new Winter single, “Lose You.”

The song — the follow-up to a handful of singles and collaborations released since Winter’s splendid third album, “Endless Space (Between You & I),” in 2020 — finds the native of Curitiba, Brazil, deep in reverie, and not necessarily a pleasant one.

“It’s a song about one of my saddest moments, where I realized that my close friend had been groomed by this older person that we all knew,” Winter says. “I locked myself in my studio, turned on my blue light, and channeled this moment of despair through writing this song. Painting with exclamations from my Juno synth and releasing my emotions in a flurry of reverse delayed vocals.”

“Lose You” was recorded as part of some marathon pandemic sessions at Studio 22 in L.A. with producer Joo Joo Ashworth (Automatic, Dummy, SASAMI). “I felt like I was making music in a dark cave with an old friend and no one else existed,” the songwriter says.

The single is out via Bar/None Records, and surely an album announcement will be forthcoming.
