Video premiere: Mines Falls, ‘Right Angle’ (feat. O Mer)

Brother duo Mines Falls — Carson and Erik Lund — have crafted two albums and an EP of cinematic, mostly downtempo art-rock, weaving electronic and analog instrumentation into a tapestry that is at once captivating and harrowing. Dystopian times deserve discomfiting soundtracks, and here anxieties simmer in slow-burning melancholy, flashing an almost defiant beauty.

“Right Angle” is the follow-up to their 2021 covers EP, “Once I Was You,” and the first single from their forthcoming third full-length, “Piano Caldera.” It features a guitar solo by Omer Schonberger (aka O Mer).

“This is our version of a Talking Heads or LCD Soundsystem drum-and-bass groover,” Erik Lund says, “tinged with an aura of coming apocalypse and elevated to the stratosphere by an absolutely ripping guitar solo from our friend and contemporary, O Mer.”

It is nothing if not restless … and such is the world, right?

“The modern consumerist landscape, accelerated by the pandemic, encourages us to live passive, sedentary lifestyles in which we are captive to our various screens and made to feel powerless against the narrow conditions of our lives,” Lund says. “‘Right Angle’ was born out of a growing frustration with those conditions, and a restless desire to break through the facade in some way. We wanted to make a song that fizzles with pent-up energy and a sense of rebellion from both the forces that govern our lives and even the musical style that we’ve come to be associated with.”

Like all their videos, “Right Angle” is directed by the Lunds (Carson as director/DP/editor and Erik as art director/VFX), who are founding members of the film production company Omnes Films (2020’s “Ham on Rye”). Along with a vintage muscle car, they star in the new video as well.

“In our cinematic representation of the song, we find ourselves speeding through an urban dystopia in a retro sports car, absorbed in an obsessive quest to extract a trio of magical gems to soup up our ride,” Lund says. “A tongue-in-cheek riff on technological fetishism and the modern consumer condition that pulls from the neo-noir stylings of ’80s-era Mann, Carpenter and Carax.
