The Jesus and Mary Chain, the Chameleons, Kittin & the Hacker, Youth Code, Clock DVA and more will perform at Substance, the annual festival in downtown L.A. feeding off the history of the underground by offering an array of ’80s-style synth music, EBM, industrial, post-punk, darkwave, shoegaze and dream-pop.

The festival will be held over two nights, Oct. 21 and 22, at the Los Angeles Theater.

Tickets went on sale this morning here.

Cabaret Voltaire co-founder Steven Mallinder, Boy Harsher, Light Asylum, Sextile, Kontravoid, Linea Aspera, Schwefelgelb, Kælan Mikla and Pistol Grip are among the other artists appearing at Substance, the brainchild of the L.A. nightlife collective Restless, aka Restless Nites.

“Over the years we have strived to curate unique and atypical lineups, Substance 2022 is no exception,” Substance co-founder Brian Tarney says. “We hold the DIY ethos very near and dear to our hearts. In the past, pandemics and outside forces have made presenting our unique vision all the more complex, but the stars have aligned and autonomy reigns. This year we are able to present a slew of the deepest architects of post-punk and goth aesthetic, alongside some of the most amazing up-and-coming acts in the scene. We intend to fully utilize our favorite theater in Los Angeles to the apex of Substance.”

As in the past, visual and performance art will be a component of Substance, which returns to the Los Angeles Theater after spending last year at the Belasco. “The Los Angeles Theater is a jaw-dropping, historical theater in DTLA,” says Liz Garo, Substance’s talent buyer and production coordinator. “The return of Substance 2022 to this rarely used, multi-room venue will just add to the experience. The art deco-inspired bathrooms, grand staircase and giant chandelier form a unique backdrop that lends itself to the audience.”
