Under the name Meija, singer-songwriter producer Jamie Sierota continues to carve out his own path since he departed the sibling outfit Echosmith five-plus years ago. He released EPs in 2019 (“So Long, Kid”) and 2021 (“Premonition”) and earlier this summer signed to Nettwerk for future endeavors.

His easygoing, hybrid synth-pop/indie-rock focuses on relatable things — like his new single “No Excuses,” a song that he says is “about trying to place blame on anything other than myself. Sometimes it’s not the universe or something bigger, sometimes I just need to face the facts that I could do better if I really tried.”

Words to live by. Or to share a meal over, as director Redamo Rosa’s video for the song suggests. “The video is really a love letter to L.A. and its food scene,” Meija says. “I wanted to feature some of my favorite dishes in town, some of which I’ve been eating since I was a kid! I used all the different food as a metaphor for trying everything, grasping at straws, only to realize that the source of my problems might just be me.”

The song is the follow-up to “Not Sure How This Ends,” a woozy indie-rocker that sighs at an uncertain world.

To be honest, though, we went straight back to the “No More Excuses” video. What’s for dinner?
