Ears Wide Open: Widows Gold

Widows Gold make sharp indie-rock informed by post-punk, new wave and the garage-rock revival of the early 2000s.
The quartet — founded by the husband-wife duo of Ben Sauer and Madeline Star and now including bassist Ian Zamora and drummer Carson Ford — made an auspicious debut last year, releasing a self-titled EP, highlighted by the single “pretend.” It was produced by Chris Karn (whom longtimers will remember fondly from Standing Hawthorn and Deccatree).
Widows Gold returns today with the first taste of “Love Drops,” the full-length (planned for January 2023) that they have been recording at Gold Pacific Studios in Newport Beach. First single “Inside” is a visceral declaration of love — “When it’s just you and I / I feel like I won’t fall, I just might fly,” Madeline sings — that explodes in a burst of drums and riffs. They promise there’s more to come throughout the rest of 2022.
