With his swaggering presence, Nathaniel Rateliff has stalked stages around the world, singing with enough soul-powered energy to make even the biggest venues feel like packed clubs. His band, the Night Sweats, is a rock ’n’ roll force to be reckoned with, one whose horn section sends their rave-ups into rarefied air. And on their latest album, 2021’s “The Future,” they show there’s a heart beating beneath all that muscle.

That’s what to expect Sunday night, Aug. 14, when Nathaniel Rateliff & the Night Sweats headline the Hollywood Bowl as part of the KCRW Festival.

Supporting the headliners will be progressive funk and soul outfit Durand Jones & the Indications.  Their music has always felt like it came from a timeless record pulled out of the back of a vintage shop, but as the Indiana group digs deeper into their sound, they keep finding more: a bit of disco, some synth-pop, a touch of hip-hop. It’s a powerful combination, so much so that former President Obama called their song “Witchoo” one of his favorites of 2021.

Opening the evening will be Celisse, whose blues-tinged, hard-rocking sound — and soulful voice — have won her gigs with many notable musicians from Mariah Carey and Graham Nash, as well as becoming a founding member of Trey Anastasio’s Ghosts of the Forest. She has also performed on Broadway for the national tour of “Wicked” and on Saturday Night Live playing lead guitar for Lizzo.
