Nathaniel Rateliff and The Night Sweats got the El Rey Theatre pumping Tuesday night with the vintage soul from their breakout self-titled album, released in August on Stax Records. Rateliff, who segued from his folk singing days to embrace the horn-infused Stax sound, and his six-piece group definitely made sure the show was one to remember, getting entire crowd dancing. The audience was right there with the band on every note, earning their encore by continuing the “ooooh oh oh, ooooh oh oh!” chant from their big single “S.O.B.” after the group closed with the song.

JR JR — the new name under which Dale Earnhardt Jr. Jr.’s Daniel Zott and Joshua Epstein are doing business — preceded Rateliff with a lively set focusing on tunes from their September self-titled release. The show was part of radio station ALT98.7’s December concert series.
