Here’s the truth: Last week was the 30th anniversary of the release of “Would I Lie to You,” the first big hit for the neo-soul duo Charles and Eddie.
Also a fact: Today, the latter half of that duo, Eddie Chacon, announced his signing to Stones Throw Records and released a new single, “Holy Hell.” The release continues a renaissance that saw him release the 2020 album, “Pleasure, Joy and Happiness,” via Light in the Attic affiliate Day End Records. The producer of that album, John Carroll Kirby (Solange, Frank Ocean, Blood Orange), collaborated with Chacon again on a couple more singles since, and now on “Holy Hell.”
“After so many years without an outlet for my music, I’m so grateful to be back doing what I have loved the most throughout my life,” says Chacon, who spent many years as a fashion photographer and creative director. “The success of ‘Pleasure, Joy and Happiness’ was such a surprise because it was a record about closure for me. I expected it to be a final goodbye to music as a way of letting go and moving on. Being invited to join the Stones Throw family is an opportunity I never thought I’d have in my life.”
In the video, directed by Sissy Chacon, the singer tools around Los Angeles in a salvation-themed car, taking the band with him on a tour of the city. “In ‘Holy Hell’ I’m talking about how we forget that our happiness is determined by our headspace,” Chacon says, “and how it’s up to us whether we want to live our brief time here on Earth in heaven or hell.”
Enjoy the groove, and the ride.
