With an EP in 2017 and another in 2019, San Bernardino’s Royaljag rekindled the flames of New Jack Swing with their synth-drenched funk and soul. The trio — twins Jay and Roland Garcia and best friend David Ajoku — stepped out as the pride of the 909, with a song to prove it.

After cooling their heels writing and doing some choice covers during the pandemic, Royaljag is back with their first new dose of what they call “chameleon pop” since 2019.

With its bubbling, warm synths and falsetto vocals, “Activate” will bring up the room temperature anywhere. “Your face is glowing and the moment’s here to last / Forget all that you lack …” Now that’s the spirit.
