Ears Wide Open: Sand Box

Kylie Hazzard and Cameron Black have aptly christened their project Sand Box, such is the pliant nature of their genre-bending musical explorations. Hazzard has a cross-disciplinary background, having worked in film, music and writing. Black is a session man and touring player, with saxophone as his weapon of choice. The pair met in 2019 while playing in another band.
Sand Box’s latest castle is titled “Porcelain Dolls,” released this week. The sultry single begins as an unassuming guitar/bass-driven bop with the brass trailing in the background before Black’s saxophone takes over and chews up the scenery. Between Hazzard’s revealing lyricism and Black’s sinuous outro, it makes for a smoky farewell to the youth the dolls represent.
