Songwriters Yegor Borisenko (Yogurt) and McCoy Kirgo (Giant Killer Bats) had three things in common this past summer that led to the collaborative single, “Good Luck”: Both were newbies at the co-writing game; they were battling writer’s block; and they shared a mutual obsession with Elliott Smith.
Smith’s influence is evident in the willowy melancholy of “Good Luck,” which was recorded at Borisenko’s home studio and then sent to Sam Plecker (of Vista Kicks) at Hound Sound Recording, for drum engineering, mixing and mastering.
The video for the song is a pure delight, lightly humorous and touching. It was directed by Jordan Cramer, with an assist from his roommates Michael Tilley and Joe McNairy, all who had time on their hands because of the show-biz strikes. Said Borisenko: “They took our half-baked idea for a no-budget camcorder video and used the opportunity to flex their creative muscles, resulting in a hi-fi cinematic (dare-I-say) short film that exceeded my and McCoy’s wildest dreams.”
