Charles Moothart released three albums as CFM before switching from his initials to his given name for the release of 2021’s EP, “Soft Crime.” The singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist, a longtime weapon in the many projects of Ty Segall, now turns DIY hero for the release of his new album, “Black Holes Don’t Choke,” out March 8 via In the Red Records.

Moothart’s fuzz-charged psychedelia speaks chaos to chaos — his self-described “love songs for the apocalypse” hold a mirror to a world in turmoil as if the reflection will somehow prod all of us to throw our arms in the air and shout “Enough!” If only witnessing havoc would do more than inure us from it.

“Disarm the hatred from above,” Moothart urges in the gear-shifting new single, “Roll,” with director Matt Yoka’s video providing some warp-speed imagery that, depending on what you had for lunch, gives the experience proper altitude.

Moothart wrote, recorded and mixed the new album himself in his L.A. studio. “Black Holes” expands the artist’s sonic world to include sampling and sequencing.
