Ears Wide Open: Orchin

Orchin is the musical moniker of Jeremy McLennan, who moved to L.A. from Australia while in grade school and late last year released two synth-spiked singles he made with Grammy-winning producer-engineer Shawn Everett (Lucius, Julian Casablancas, Weezer). His two new singles, “Dark” and “Wasting Time,” don’t sound like his two previous releases, though. Here, singing in properly detached fashion, Orchin finds inspiration in the jangling mopery of the post-punk-inspired U.K. indie scene of 2 1/2 or 3 decades ago. “Wasting Time’s” acidic shoegazing would not have been out of place among the C86 bands, and “Dark” recalls the early albums of the Go-Betweens, only, well, darker. Orchin’s new singles were produced by McLennan himself and feature bassist Marcus Hogsta and drummer Daniel Vanchieri, with James Watson adding guitar on “Wasting Time.” “More soon,” Orchin promises on his socials.
