A year after releasing a spit-shined (electronic) version of their 2012 album “Aloha Moon,” L.A.-based duo Magic Wands have fired up their mystical dream-pop machine for a new full-length, “Illuminate,” out digitally on Dec. 4.
Collaborators since the days of MySpace, Chris and Dexy Valentine self-produced the new album, their fourth and the follow-up to 2018’s “Abrakadabra.” While the duo went heavier into shoegaze and post-punk on 2016’s “Jupiter,” the early singles from “Illuminate” are more the shimmering, fuzzy pop goodness of their debut. Dexy Valentine is suitably drunk on desire in the latest single, “Blue Cherry”: “Lick, lick, lick / You’re like jam to me / I stole you from the store / Got caught on camera.”
It’s Magic Wands’ fifth single of 2020. The duo’s “lovewave” (their term) musical cocktail has always been varying parts New Wave, post-punk and shoegaze, perfect for dark clubs (we can dream) and bands playing with hyperactive fog machines. With “Illuminate,” it’ll be another chance to cozy up in a corner.
