Video: Miya Folick, ‘Oh God’

It’s the phrase heard round the world — an utterance of disbelief, an oath, a plea for intervention, a declaration of resignation, a cry for clarity.

“Oh God” is also the new single from L.A.-based singer-songwriter Miya Folick, her first release since 2019. It’s hard not to momentarily think of XTC’s “Dear God” (aside: now there’s a song for these times) hearing the song, which was co-produced by and co-written with Mike Malchicoff (King Princess, Yellow Days, Del Water Gap).

The song, one of many Folick showcased at a pre-pandemic show at the Echo, is her first release since her cover of Death Cab for Cutie’s “I Will Follow You Into the Dark” in 2019. Her debut album, “Premonitions,” came out the previous year.

“Oh God,” which presages an EP coming via Nettwerk, is a short but jarring self-reproach for “spending all my twenties not believing anything,” as she sings.

“‘Oh God’ is that moment of sudden remorse/panic/fear: when you put your palm to your forehead and wonder what you have done with your life,” the Santa Ana-reared songwriter says. “You know that something needs to change, and for the first time, you’re willing to try anything.”

Such thoughts often call for long drives, which always give one the feeling, at least, that we’re going somewhere. That is where we find Folick in the video directed by Lucy Sandler.
