Today’s singles trifecta features catchy things from Pretty, Young Winona and Hazel English. You know the drill …
PRETTY., “Gotchu”
L.A. indie-rockers Pretty (aka PRETTY.) made a killer first impression with their debut single “Breathe Some” a few years back. Since then, they’ve released the EP “Honey, It Was Paradise” (2021). And this week, the band — Milosh Petko, Mihailo Lukic, Toplica Petko, Felipe Rodriguez and Connor Bond — returned with sparkling, jangling ’80s-styled goodness in the way of the single “Gotchu.” It was Lukic came up with the riff while he was on tour playing guitar for Kid Bloom, supporting Bad Suns. “Gotchu” got us.
YOUNG WINONA, “Sadistic”
“You make me feel murderous,” Cassie Gaffaney sings on Young Winona’s new single, “Sadistic.” But she sings it — along with other promises of violence, so niiiiicely. It’s the L.A.-by-way-of-New Zealand trio’s second single of 2022, following the rip-snorter “Red Dress.” It was back in 2021 that they announced their signing to Poor Man Records with the song “Killer Daisies,” and the band — Cassie Gaffaney and her husband Nick, along with Geoff Maddock, have been finding ways to keep their early-rock ’n’ roll sound interesting ever since.
HAZEL ENGLISH, “All Dressed Up” (feat. Day Wave)
What’s that saying? The hits keep right on coming? Hazel English’s latest collaboration with Jackson Phillips of Day Wave is titled “All Dressed Up, and it will appear on her “Summer Nights” EP, out June 17. Not lost in the duo’s shimmering vocals is how the song reveals the melancholy of being ignored by someone you love. “All dressed up for you / and baby you don’t even have a clue,” English sings. Sigh.
