As if Gabriels’ album “Angels & Queens” (the deluxe edition of which was released last week) weren’t uplifting enough, there’s the video for the album track “Great Wind.”
It’s the work of avant-garde artist Omar Karim, who is known for his use of modern technology in video art. For “Great Wind,” it’s almost as if he answered the challenge: Quick, show me the diaspora of humanity in under 4 minutes.
“What interests me and Ryan [Hope, the British-born producer who is also a filmmaker] — and all of us — is how we can use modern technologies in a human way, to explore and unlock human connection in a profound new way,” Karim says. “Technology has allowed me to connect with the humanity of the music, turning lyrics, interviews and insights into a video that tells a story, like no other. This exploration of humanity and the infinite potential of this new form of film making is what connected me to idea of the song, that no matter what there is always a positive vision of the future should you choose to accept it.”
Go ahead, immerse yourself.
Leading up to their appearance at Outside Lands, Gabriels — Jacob Lusk, Ari Balouzian and Hope — play the Ford in Los Angeles on Aug. 12.
