Joel Morales’ ascent to stoner svengali of the nascent psych-pop/garage-rock/all-things-retro scene in L.A. has to put a smile on the face of everybody who’s followed him in the past decade. Now using the name Joel Jerome, he makes music and produces young artists associated with the Manimal, Burger and Lolippop labels, his wizened ways earning […]
Every psych-pop rugrat in the city should have been at the Echo for the Dios reunion on Sunday night, but it was 4/20 and, who knows, maybe they were on their couches practicing being psychedelic. This was reason enough to man up, though: Dios, who later went by Dios (Malos) after catching some legal flak […]

Before Beck was a platinum record-selling superstar, he was a DIY folk singer, whose sense of whimsy and experimentation shone through on indie albums he released both before and after he signed his major-label contract. This is the Beck to whom fledgling songwriter Joel Morales was drawn. “He was so insouciant and carefree, and, maybe […]
I’m not sure from whose imagination this video sprang, but Dios’ trippy song “Stare at Wheel” deserved better than some cut-and-paste psychedelia. In fact, the Hawthorne band’s early-2010 “We Are Dios” deserves a better ride than it’s gotten. Worth revisiting. The album, I mean.
Fun facts you should know about L.A. rockers White Arrows: They make synth-addled indie rock that makes me imagine the Strokes, in a happier place, with big breakers. They are Mickey Schiff, JP Caballero (Dios), Steven Vernet, Rob Banks and Damon Kellard – and sometimes Schiff’s teenage brother Henry, when the venues let him in. […]
The Silverlake Jubilee arrives with a bang this weekend, the first-year music and arts festival bringing some 50 bands to a three-stage neighborhood fair featuring cutting-edge DJs, comedy, spoken word, film, art and fashion – not to mention three dozen or so food trucks to satiate attendees’ appetites. Buzz Bands LA has joined with Jubilee […]
