Capital Cities, the L.A. dance-pop outfit founded Sebu Simonian and Ryan Merchant, returned today with their first new music in more than three years — and six-plus years after they vaulted to prominence with their first single “Safe and Sound.” “Vowels” is a little-bit-funky disco jam accented by the band’s signature horns and a sticky chorus that probably makes the letter “I” feel lonely. It’s the vowel that gets left out. The idea, Simonian says, is simple: “When you can’t express yourself with words, sometimes you just want to scream to get it all out. You need vowels to do that.” The song appears on the new FIFA 17 video game (and soundtrack) released this week, and, probably, dance-floor mixes at a club night near you.
