At a glance, Girlpool’s “Powerplant” video simply aims to capture the clashing microcosms of a local bowling alley. Set at All-Star Lanes, there are youngsters watching a band in the restaurant side, channeling all their excitement into subdued head-nodding. Out in the bowling area, girls celebrate a birthday, a lonely man sips from a coconut, people eat chicken wings and pizza … but then a man in black starts to interfere with “the actors” and things goes into that meta realm, a video about the making of a video, forced emotions and assigned behavior. Director Philip Steiger says the “music video is a meta-narrative nightmare exploring the power dynamics and manipulation behind an insincere candidness.” The song itself is the title track from Girlpool’s new album “Powerplant,” coming out on Anti- Records this Friday. With drummer Miles Wintner in the mix, the women explore further dimensions of soft rock.
