Kassia Conway has had her ups and downs since releasing her major-label EP as Conway five years ago, but on that release and ensuing work she never lost her ability to imbue her music with a sense of purpose and attitude — and make it all danceable. Last week, Conway returned with the new single “Woman,” which is typically heavy on the moxie but also part of a larger effort (now an app) called “The Woman’s Project.” (Get the app here.)
The song, the opener on her forthcoming EP “Quality of Life,” was the basis “for an interactive digital art piece seeking to give a face (more accurately, many faces) to the existence of women,” Conway says. “By showing the world our infinitely unique and diverse faces, The Woman Project hopes to bring about dialogue, celebration and progress through representation.”
The app allows users to stream the song (with 20% of the proceeds going to Planned Parenthood), translate the app in 50 languages, take a selfie that becomes part of the Woman Project Exhibit and, if users wish, make a donation to their favorite women’s organizations by just clicking a tab. Conway talked at length about the project in an interview with Forbes.
Says Conway: “I want to continue to find creative ways to have conversations with the world and encourage us to celebrate our diverse strengths and beauty.”
