Oyster Kids, the indie-pop aircraft that carries the sky-high songs of singer-songwriter Andrew Eapen, have flown under the radar since releasing a handful of affecting singles in 2016. Eapen, with bandmates Roy Tanaka (keyboards), Robbie Gullage (bass) and Jonathan Bradley (drums), returns this week with the bright new single “Losing My Mind.”
Besides working on his band’s music, Eapen has spent the past year-plus toiling in the composing world, as well as co-writing and producing for other artists. He re-enters Oyster Kids’ atmosphere with 3 1/2 minutes of synth-pop that hides its melancholy in cheery melody and warm production. “Sometimes I get lost in my thoughts and start to overthink everything,” he told The 405, where the song premiered. “It turns into focusing on my flaws, and it becomes harder to see outside of that. This song is about the feeling of hopelessness and how its difficult to get out of that mindset.”
The song’s video, starring Alex Whittington and directed by Kamell Allaway, was filmed in Seward, Alaska — much of it on a remote island. The character-driven piece finds Whittington awakening one morning to find a woman he had met missing. He follows her footprints deep into the wilderness, where he incrementally falls apart psychologically.
“We wanted the video to feel grounded in reality at first, but eventually evolve into the surreal,” Eapen explains. “The psyche of Alex spills out on every image of the video, creating a fairly abstract moody experience. His identity in a way is the subject of this video. You might not know who he is, where he came from, or if you can even trust him, which is exactly what someone might experience when going through an identity crisis. Someone might look at this character as a drifter, uncertain of where he belongs, and detached from others.”
An Oyster Kids EP is on the way later this year.
