Evolving with every release since their start as a party band in Magic Mountain-adjacent Newhall, William Keegan (guitar, vocals), Danny Bengston (bass) and Erik Jimenez (drums) — unified as Together Pangea —  tease the second single off their third release via Nettwerk Records, the second of two companion EPs that fit like opposite halves of a walnut.

As opposed to the hard frenetics of last October’s “Non Stop Paranoia,” the upcoming collective of songs that make up the EP “Dispassionate” still rock, but with a softer and more melodic-acoustic feel, leaving the overdrive (and insecurity) on the shelf for a brief moment as they explore post-’80s Paisley Underground territory. Their latest single, “Never Said I Wanna,” veers towards ’90s Brit jangle-pop, as Keegan sings, “It’s in the past, boy, like a giant sun / Try to follow my head or my heart / But my head, it’s just never won, yeah / Never said I wanna / Never said I wanna / Come around here to drown in this water…” It’s the beginning of a gradual awakening that plunging feet-first without thinking is a thing of the past now as one begins to have the forethought to see bad situations with enough distance ahead to take a different route and avoid them.

Keegan expands on the larger themes of the EP: “’Dispassionate’ is the moon and ‘Non Stop Paranoia’ was the sun. These new songs are kind of the opposite of the last batch. They are calmer and self-reflective, and the style is influenced by the 50’s and 60’s revival that happened in the ’80s.”

Turn your tube emulator up and take a bite into “Never Said I Wanna.” Together Pangea’s EP “Dispassionate” will be out May 31.
