Video: SadGirl, ‘Chlorine’

Over the past 4-plus years, L.A. trio SadGirl have played DIY heroes with an arsenal of consciously retro garage-rock, releasing a series of singles and EPs independently and backing them with a stylish stage presence. It’s the kind of stuff that might evoke misty memories from oldsters who used to plunk dimes in the jukebox and excite younger fans who might only know that era from vintage movies.

This week, SadGirl — Misha Lindes, David Ruiz and Dakota Peterson — announced that their debut full-length, “Water,” would be out June 14 via Suicide Squeeze. And with the news came the video for the croony ballad, “Chlorine,” itself a rather well-done period piece.

Lindes portrays a James Dean-like rebel who whisks a young girl (Chlorine, played by Parker Bowling) away from her life in a trailer living with her mother (Jill Jacobson). Ah, true romance. Lawlessness ensues before our young heroine has a realization, with director Nathan Castiel bringing the tale to a surprise finish.

As for the album, “Water” plays on the dichotomy of SadGirl’s home of Los Angeles — a constantly thirsty coastal desert. Lindes says the title came from something the band’s friend and engineer Max Garland said: “If you want to learn about water, go to the desert.” Says Lindes: “Here we are in Los Angeles, a desert, ping-ponging between drought and El Niño. This record is just an attempt to share a very small portion of my experience growing up and living here.”
