Nikolai Fraiture [pictured] of the Strokes – under the nom de tune Nickle Eye – released his debut “The Time of the Assassins” this week, and while it’s not the most ambitious album in the universe, its stripped-down, world-weary folk aims higher than certain other side projects. Nickel Eye headlines the Troubadour, supported by local anthemic rockers Low Vs Diamond. … Good stuff at the Viper Room: Australia’s (via NYC) the Morning After Girls (album coming in the spring), Zaza and the Pacific are on the bill; the New York trio Zaza droned me into a happy submission on Tuesday at the Echoplex. … Two Guns has the second of its two album-release shows, this one at the Detroit Bar in Costa Mesa. … At the El Rey, it’s cabaret crazies the Yard Dogs Road Show (Chris Pierce is performing early). … And downtown, it’s Pepper and Shwayze rockin’ Club Nokia.
