[Birthday wishes to Butch Walker on Saturday. … Here’s what’s on my weekend radar, for one reason or another – for a more comprehensive list, please visit Duke at You Set the Scene:]

Tonight: It’s Week 2 of Julian Casablancas’ flashy residency at the Downtown Palace Theatre, and when I saw the opener last week the Strokes frontman-turned-synth-rocker promised to tweak things every week. One change is that a second opening band has been added, the Growlers joining Rainbow Arabia on the bill. … Seattle folk-country quartet Grand Archives [pictured] has been getting some love for its new album “Keep in Mind Frankenstein” [download below], and the foursome headlines with Bootleg Theatre with Sara Lov opening. … The Raveonettes [download] bring their fuzz-pop to the Fonda Theatre. … Illinois indie-poppers Headlights [background] turns on the high beams at Spaceland, and Anni Rossi opens. … Fun. [review, video] hits the Troubadour with Dusty Rhodes and the River Band. … Lindsey Ray celebrates the release of her debut EP, “Picture Perfect,” at the Hotel Cafe. … And the Wierd Festival 2009 gets underway downtown (NOMAD, 1993 Blake Ave.), with Blacklist [download] playing its first L.A. show. … Also: The Urinals at the Smell; Bomba Estereo at the Echo; Thunderheist at the Echoplex; Semi Precious Weapons at the Viper Room; / Winter Gloves / Sugar and Gold / Franki Chan @ Echoplex ($14)

Saturday: Everybody genuflects at the mention of the Kinks, and with good reason, but Ray Davies’ show at the Orpheum Theatre ought to be interesting – the new album from Ray Davies and the Crouch End Festival Chorus is titled “The Kinks Choral Collection,” a revisiting of Kinks classics with, well, voices raised. The Vox Society Choir accompanies. … Hollywood Brew Fest at the Fonda Theatre [background] features lots of indie rock – Great Northern, Dum Dum Girls, the Deadly Syndrome and Nico Stai, among others, and plenty of beer tastings to wash it down with. …” Vampire Weekend [pictured at its Halloween show] plays its sold-out show at the Lomita VFW Hall. … And Bobby Syvarth celebrates the release of his new “Hellos and Goodbyes” at the Hotel Cafe. … Also:” The Cat Empire at the sold-out Troubadour;” Pinback at the El Rey Theatre; Crocodiles opening for the Raveonettes at the Glass House; Gil Mantera’s Party Dream, with Abe Vigoda, at Spaceland; the Monthlies at Echo Curio;” Russian Circles at the Echoplex; and Love Grenades at Bardot.

Sunday: Leslie Stevens of Leslie & the Badgers, Lelia Broussard, Charlotte Martin and Arrica Rose will be among the performers at the launch party at the Hotel Cafe for the I Heart 2010 Bombshell Alliance Pin-Up Calendar – proceeds from which go to charity. Here’s the background. …” Mission of Burma plays the Echo, with the Henry Clay People opening. … And at Spaceland, it’s” Charlie Wadhams and” Ferraby Lionheart, among others. .. Also:” The Mountain Goats at the Fonda Theatre; and Cartel at the Troubadour.
