The band will give it a go again tonight in the fifth show of the series.
The band had played 16 songs (setlist from their Twitter feed, at left)Â when Petty told the crowd, “I’m sorry, we’ve been told to go. It’s just one of those things.” It was about 10:30 p.m., almost an hour after venue security guards had stopped allowing fans to enter the Fonda’s floor area, one attendee told Buzz Bands LA. That left about 100 people stranded in the lobby.
Two attendees told Buzz Bands LA that, unlike previous shows at the Fonda, security on Saturday night was not checking tickets to see if they allowed floor access. In his report on Pop & Hiss, L.A. Times pop music critic Randall Roberts described the show as “noticeably more crammed” than Monday’s.
A statement from the band said the 1,300-capacity venue was not oversold. “Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers and our representatives rely on the concert promoter and venue representatives to give us an accurate breakdown of the legal capacity for every part of the building and to provide security and other staff to enforce this,” it said, describing the band as “as frustrated as you are.” A representative of concert promoter Goldenvoice said there would be “no separate statement from GV.” Fans have reacted angrily on the Fonda’s Facebook page.
