Despite recently losing Kim Deal, Pixies are back with a new single titled “Bagboy.” The song is the first piece of new material since 2004’s “Bam Thwok.” Although, it does have ties to older days of the band. Black Francis wrote it at a Starbucks on a Harvard campus that was only 25 feet from the spot he wrote lyrics to “Break My Body” off of the band’s highly-regarded album “Surfer Rosa.” It’s a bluesy rock number with those familiar Francis vocals, and before you assume she provided them before her departure, those backing vocals aren’t Kim Deal – even though they sound very much like it. Jeremy Dubs, who now plays bass alongside remaining members Black Francis, David Lovering and Joey Santiago, is the one who sings the title track’s lyrics over and over. Pixies’ publicist says the band is not set to release a new album, but who isn’t hoping for more when it’s been nine years? For now, everyone can enjoy the LAMAR+NIK-directed video.
