In announcing their new album “Barragán,” long-revered experimental rock trio Blonde Redhead acknowledged they were treading yet another “new sonic path.” Which means if you’re a longtime follower, you just nodded your head knowingly and made a note to go shopping on Sept. 2, when the album, the band’s ninth, will be released. Produced by Drew Brown (the engineer on records from Radiohead, Atoms for Peace, Stephen Malkmus and Here We Go Magic, among others), the album was made at the Key Club in Benton Harbor, Mich. (where Gardens & Villa worked on their second album) and promises to offer “sensual, serendipitous, sparse recordings.” The song “No More Honey” certainly qualifies. Is there such a thing as sonic “negative space?” Singer and art student Kazu Makino, who’s been making music with Italian/Canadian twins Amedeo and Simone Pace for two decades now, could probably tell me.
