Choral music can make a person feel wretched. There’s just no way humanity can compete with the wholesome, heavenly, virtuous experience of 25 beautiful harmonizing voices, especially when the singers smile shyly the way the girls do in the Silver Lake Chorus “Hold Up For” music video. Surely it was this precious gooey sensation that prompted Aussie songwriter Ben Lee to produce the upcoming self-titled debut album for the Silver Lake Chorus. After hearing the group’s lovely covers, collaborations and cameos, Lee enlisted all-star musicians to write original songs for the Chorus, including Tegan & Sara (“Hold Up For”), Sia, the Bird And The Bee, members of The Flaming Lips, Death Cab For Cutie, the New Pornographers, Bon Iver, and more. The result, “The Silver Lake Chorus” (out June 16 via Six Degrees Records), is so sweet it makes leg hair grow. Any darkness that burns in our souls is smothered as track after track delivers delightfully stylistic interpretations of choral music. Evil spirits, be warned.
