Stepping out from behind the scenes, producer-engineer-Grammy winner Cole M. G. N. (full iteration: Cole Marsden Greif-Neill) is releasing his first EP under his own name, on July 22 via Gloriette Records. Looking at the various credits under his belt — Ariel Pink’s Haunted Graffiti, Beck, Julia Holter, Nite Jewel, Blood Orange, The Vaccines, Dam-Funk and Stones Throw, to name a few — the imagination could devise any number of possibilities for what his music would sound like. Taking flight from his iteration as The Samps, it sounds like a little bit of lots of things chopped up, reversed, twisted, and warped into a sort of bent funk-pop best suited for after-the-after-hours in someone’s hot apartment mini-rave attended by those for whom the party never dies but only gets weirder. The samples are sliced with a very sharp knife; they’re clean and layered with precision. It’s beat sushi.
