Three years since captivating audiences as an opening act, Moses Sumney has released but a trickle of music: A bedroom EP in 2014 and four singles, all employing sparse production to amplify his heavenly vocals. His new single (and third this year) is “Worth It,” unveiled last week via director Allie Avital’s stark, gripping video starring Martha Nichols. As the visuals suggest, the song is more a finger down the spine than an assault on the earholes. Sumney the artist remains elusive here, mostly owing to the surprising use of autotuned vocals. Because, it says here, Moses Sumney don’t need no stinkin’ autotune. “Worth It” arrives as Sumney scheduled shows in church sanctuaries in L.A. and London; he’s been heavenly in that setting before.
* Update: The new song is from a six-track EP Sumney will self-release on Sept. 30, titled “Lamentations.” The EP announcement came with news that Sumney will open for James Blake on 16 dates (none in L.A.) starting Sept. 23.
