Moses Sumney

Moses Sumney has a thing for water. (Remember that photo of him floating in red liquid?) Water, or weightlessness, serves as metaphor both for his music and his perspective on life. Not the kind of weightlessness that’s care-free. Not at all. His thoughts are heavy, but his voice floats gently in space. On this new song, “Doomed,” the bare instrumentation enhances the sensation of leaving gravity behind. His singing carries all his emotion; it feels like we’re traveling around the landscape of his vocal chords. It’s an ethereal experience, and also one that triggers some sad feelings, the lonely ones. In good news, Sumney has signed with Jagjaguwar to release his first full-length album, adding to a discography that includes two EPs, “Mid-City Island” (2014) and “Lamentations” (2016). The Allie Avital-directed video for “Doomed” has a sci-fi twist, as we find him floating in an incubator naked, tube attached.
