L.A.-based trio ASHRR came on the radar last year with the creepy/cool video for “Sometimes” (one of our favorites of 2018), and a most unusual backstory.

The synth-rock band is composed of singer Steven Davis, a crooner who has sung gospel, shared the stage with the likes of Diana Krall and Tony Bennett, co-written with John Oates and is the kind of guy who could light up your house party with his command of the Great American Songbook. He is joined by Josh Charles (a pianist, guitarist, singer-songwriter and producer who was mentored by Dr. John) and Ethan Allen (a multi-instrumentalist, songwriter and producer best known for his work with the likes of Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, Gram Rabbit, Ben Harper and a host of others). All three have worked extensively in music for film and television.

The trio met through friends and dove into the studio last year. “Our collective love of analog synth-pop, classic New Wave melodies and songwriting and taking modern production to the limits, defines us,” Charles says. “We all come from different backgrounds, which is what can be heard inside the music.”

Their music channels artists such as David Bowie, Peter Murphy, Talking Heads and Gary Numan in the same way contemporaries like Future Islands (probably the closest comparison) do. And it sounds like ASHRR is having fun doing it.

On May 10, ASHRR will release their full-length debut “Oscillator,” the follow-up to a self-titled EP they released in December. The latest single “All Yours All Mine” sounds like a lost gem from the 1980s, sporting a massive groove, sophisticated production and the proclamation that “We’re on our worst behavior,” delivered with purposefulness of guys who know good from bad.

This is not saccharine kid stuff, but kids young and old can sure bump and grind to it.
