2018: Buzz Bands LA’s Favorite Videos of the Year

Clockwise from left: Iggy Pop in Death Valley Girls' video; Childish Gambino; Anderson .Paak; Miya Folick; 80-year-old Vera in Brett Dennen's video; Steven Davis (and friend) in ASHRR's video

Of all the videos Buzz Bands LA posted in 2018, this selection stood out with humor, strangeness, poignancy, drama, technical effort, storyline and, in a few cases, just pretty colors. Some of the videos clearly had big budgets, but others took the DIY route, with inventive results that merit applause.

Miya Folick, “Stop Talking”

A sense of humor, great coloring and cute choreography elevate this important message, ‘STOP TALKING ABOUT THAT BOY.’

Part Time, “Shattered Love”

Greased-up muscly men in jean cut-off shorts and cowboy boots line-dance to the rhythm of David Loca’s achy breaky heart.

Broods, “Peach”

Absurdity ensues on a late night talk show.

Joey Dosik, “Inside Voice”

A steamy seduction between clam and meatball.

Steady Holiday, “Who’s Gonna Stop Us”

Two leaders calmly vie for control over some kind of cult they manipulate in an ominous staging of Simon Says.

Death Valley Girls, “Disaster Is What We’re After”

An iconic accomplishment. Iggy Pop eating a hamburger in the style of Andy Warhol.

ASHRR, “Sometimes”

When someone brings a weird friend to the party.

Anderson .Paak, “Bubblin”

Hilarious over-the-top cautionary tale of greed involving an ATM that follows the rapper around spitting out money.

Dylan Rodrigue, “Make It Better”

What will they do to him next?

Sam Morrow, “Quick Fix”

In this homage to Jessica Simpson’s “These Boots Are Made For Walking” video, guest star Ben Reddell takes off his pants and lets it all hang out.

Moon Honey, “Mask Maker”

With an amazing mask that cycles through emotions, this stop-motion video examines a woman’s struggle with being exploited for her sexuality.

Brett Dennen, “Already Gone”

An 80 year old woman fulfills her bucket list of riding in a limo, shooting a fire extinguisher, streaking and eating a giant sundae while sitting in a tub of sprinkles on the beach. Meanwhile, Dennen does her laundry.

Childish Gambino, “This Is America”

This arresting commentary on society stands as the most impactful video of the year.

Tropa Magica (fka Thee Commons), “Camisa Al Reves”

Things get crazy at the quinceañera styled like it’s 1991 in East L.A.

Lens Mozer, “Cut My Heart In Two”

Pretty colors and shapes in motion make this abstract video very satisfying to watch.

Matt Costa, “Sharon”

The best part about this video is the surreal setting that is an actual place in Montana, a motel saloon with mermaids swimming behind the bar. And that he gets with one of the mermaids after too many blue drinks.

Yacht, “Shame”

Yacht gets meta, spoofing and endorsing a product while spoofing and endorsing a lifestyle.

Nona, “Girls”

This animation gets literal about love. They walk all over each other and then she rips his skin off in little bits. Then her skin falls off.

MGMT, “Me And Michael”

Fleshy phones, fudge and weird things with gelatin highlight this tale about a band that steals a song and pays the price.

Prism Tats, “Daggers”

The video borders on being a very wonderful episode of My Strange Addiction.

Former Faces, “Open The Gates”

There’s just something about this dancing lion man in a suit.

Seasons, “Kwyjibo”

A monster leaves his couch to defeat the alien invasion, then takes shrooms, things get weird and he kills the people he just saved. Oops.
