When singer-songwriter Emily Gold segued from a solo career to the full-band project Velvet, she came on strong. The singles Velvet released were ragers cut from the cloth of ’90s alt-rock.

Gold, the daughter of the late, beloved ’70s songwriter and Linda Ronstadt collaborator Andrew Gold, announced early this year that Velvet would become Cosmo Gold, a collaborative four-piece with Peter Maffei (Sugar Candy Mountain), Stephen Burns (Triptides) and Mike DeLuccia (Valley Queen).

This week, Cosmo Gold unveiled the first single from their debut EP, “Waiting on the City.” Baked by cosmic rays and a sunny disposition, “Dark Matter” recalls the bright sensibilities of ’90s warriors such as Velocity Girl and Bettie Serveert. It’s an uplifting stand-by-your-troubled-man song. “You hold your demons like a baby,” Gold sings while promising that “if they get the best of you / I’ll be around, I’ll be your moon.”

The EP promises some heavier and even dancier moments, to be sure, but for now revel in “Dark Matter’s” buoyant chorus and know that demons aren’t always a deal-breaker.
