If you miss Madchester — and if you’re keen to Madchester, we’re betting you do — you’ll want to lend an ear to Blitz Vega.

It’s the new, biocastal project from Smiths bassist Andy Rourke and Kav Blaggers (aka KAV, aka Kavin Sandhu, the L.A.-based Englishman who played guitar in the Happy Mondays, among other exploits).

Their debut single “Hey Christo” is a rager that springs from the Primal Scream/Kasabian/Black Rebel Motorcyle Club family tree.

The collaboration started with a chance backstage meeting at Coachella. “Andy was one of the legends all of us musicians growing up in the U.K. looked up to and respect,” KAV says. “A couple of years ago we talked about recording some songs together, and Andy came over to L.A. and things just naturally progressed from there.” Says Rourke: “We have so much more music in the bag.”

The live band, which features the duo along with guitarists Thomas Arizmendi and Greg Gent, keyboardist Asa Brown and drummer Craig Eriksson, makes its live L.A. debut next week.
