Much has changed in the three years since the Shelters released their debut album in the summer of 2016. They toured with with the likes of the Head and the Heart, Royal Blood, the Killers, Gary Clark Jr., Band Of Horses and Broncho. They toured with Tom Petty, too, and then suffered the loss of their mentor and album producer when he died suddenly in the fall of 2017.
Now back to their original trio lineup, Chase Simpson (guitar/vocals), Josh Jove (also guitar/vocals) and Sebastian Harris (drums) have released the lead track to their upcoming sophomore album, “You’re Different,” via Warner Records, addressing the effects of all that’s happened since their launch in 2015.
The earnest rocker is an alienated look at oneself from arms’ distance. “Change your face but your shadow still looks the same / If it weren’t my own I might even forget your name,” sings Simpson. “There’s something different about you / There’s something that has changed… Something’s different I can’t explain / You’re different.”
“It’s an internal conversation I have when I think about how I’ve changed over time, and through the experiences I’ve had in my life, Simpson says. “It’s hard to know how you should feel about it — whether it’s something to embrace or fear.” Moving forward, the band enlisted Joe Chiccarelli (the White Stripes, the Strokes, Morrissey, Broken Social Scene, Run River North) to produce, Ken Andrews (Failure, Starflyer 59, Pete Yorn, Paramore, Beck, Nine Inch Nails) to mix, and Emily Lazar (David Bowie, Beck, Coldplay) to master.
“We definitely have something to prove,” Simpson says. “Obviously, we want to make Tommy proud. Even more so, we want to step out of his shadow and come into our own. We knew we had to do something exciting and different to carry on being the Shelters.”
