If you slept on Wargirl’s debut album (not us), maybe their new single “Dancing Gold” will get your attention.

“Dancing Gold” is more grit than glitter, but that’s what Wargirl is all about. It sounds like something that could have been the template for a few decades of rock music, not something that’s derived from it, as vocalist Samantha Parks summons all bodies in motion as she proclaims, “I need to bare my soul.” It’s the latest slab of what the Long Beach sextet wryly calls “world garage rock.”

To review: Wargirl got together in 2017 in the studio of veteran musician/producer/visual artist Matt Wignall and first gained notice in Europe. A Swedish label released their first EP; Hamburg, Germany-based Clouds Hill released their debut album in 2018 before it got a Stateside release last year.

The band — Parks, Wignall, Tamara Raye, Enya Preston, Erick Diego Nieto and Jeff Suri — have completed work on their sophomore album. Release date is to be announced, but if “Dancing Gold” is any indication, it’ll be precious metal.

The video for the track was directed, shot and edited by Wignall and Britney Cherry, with graphics by Preston.
