“Climb” is the first original song from Blondfire since 2017, as singer-songwriter Erica Driscoll has busied herself with other pursuits, especially parenthood, as well as her collaboration with bandmate Anthony Polcino as WORLDS.

The new single, which is officially out on Friday, is the kind of astral indie-pop that plumbs the deepest of sadness to find something beautiful. It’s written in memory of songwriter-producer Adam Schlesinger (Fountains of Wayne, Ivy), who died April 1 from complications of COVID-19. “He was a friend of mine from when I lived in New York,” says Driscoll, whose original band Astaire (with her brother Bruce Driscoll, now of Freedom Fry) toured in support of Ivy, “a band that had a big impact on my musical career.

“When I heard he died from this virus, it really made it all real for me and my heart felt so heavy,” she adds. “I picked up my guitar and this song just came out. Kind of like I tuned into some frequency and it was there waiting for me. Music is so crazy that way sometimes. The song’s about rising above a bad situation to a better place.”

Even without knowing that, it’s impossible not to hear Ivy’s dreamy vibe in “Climb.” “So we climb over the hills into the light / Where no one can hurt you now / High over their heads into the clouds / Where nobody’s looking down,” Driscoll sings, but if Schlesinger is indeed looking down, he’s probably smiling.
