Ears Wide Open: G. Capitan

Around this time last year, G. Capitan posted a photo of the desert with a mostly overcast sky. The landscape represented a new sound for musician Giovan Polanco, who was one-half of the duo Moons of Mars: “This photo looks like what all the G. Capitan songs sound like.”
However, G. Capitan’s newest release and third single, “All the Way,” is quite the sunshiny tune about the value in each and every day. That is not to dismiss “All the Way” as an out-of-touch mantra far too optimistic for 2020. Instead, its mellow bass guides you into the chorus, accepting the declaration that “today is another day / that you can take it all the way.”
With Moons of Mars — Polanco’s project with his brother Mario — on hiatus, G. Capitan sees the singer-songwriter-producer shedding his more commercial pop skin for something more raw.
“Honestly, it sounds more like what I listen to and love,” says Polanco, who named his new project to honor one of his favorite places, Yosemite’s El Capitan. “More indie, but not too much. Throw some lo-fi/psychedelia/soul vibes in there, too. And still hovering in the pop world of songwriting.”
“All the Way” settles into reality as the song comes to a close, allowing Polanco to establish his new project in the mess that is 2020 (let alone the highs and lows of any lifetime). He sings: “When everything goes wrong / I’ll cry with you all night long / We could watch the sun come up / and then you can try it all again / I’ll be there to hear you say / that you’ll take it all the way.”
“All the Way,” which came out Monday along with his cover of “(There’s) Always Something There to Remind Me,” is the follow-up to G. Capitan’s March release “Make a Change.”
