In a controversial Instagram post from earlier this year, Lana Del Rey wrote she is  “just a glamorous person” singing about her “authentic, delicate” self. Such a description, however, may be more fitting for Young Summer’s new single “If the World Falls to Pieces.”

The song, Young Summer’s first of 2020, follows a slate of singles by the Nashville-based artist — real name, Bobbie Allen — for film and television. She had a song featured on the soundtrack for blockbuster “Hustlers” and Hulu series “Looking for Alaska.” “If the World Falls to Pieces” boasts Summer’s mellow, cinematic singer-songwriter flair.

“‘If The World Falls To Pieces’ is maybe my favorite song I’ve ever written,” the songwriter says. “It’s a song that I did not want, in any way, to sound defeatist but I did want it to articulate exactly how the last four years have felt, that every day the world’s end feels like it’s burning a mile from our front doors and is fast approaching.”

Young Summer’s last full release was “You Would Have Loved it Here,” an EP from October 2016. Over these last four years, the world has literally and metaphorically become engulfed by fire. It’s assumed the trajectory of 2020 inspired “If the World Falls to Pieces,” but she actually wrote the song in 2018. As summertime settles into darkness, “If the World Falls to Pieces,” an apocalyptic lullaby, gently guides you into acceptance of the end.

“It is also a hopeful love song, as the narrator chooses to focus on what is left instead of what is gone,” she says. “It’s a love song, but not necessarily a romantic love. It could be for a partner, but also for a friend or family member.”

“If the World Falls to Pieces” is the first release on the new, L.A.-based label Wehearnoise.
