Kali Flanagan — just KALI to find her music — has made it all the way to 17 years old since we first heard “Back to the Start,” which ended up being the lead track on the EP “Circles,” released last summer.
The singer-songwriter returned Friday with a slightly more clamorous new single, “Anybody Else,” a sampling from a new EP being made with producer Tony Berg.
“I wrote this song when I started seeing someone, and shortly after I began to fall for them they left for Europe,” KALI says. “Simultaneously, my best friend was falling in love, resulting in romanticized and unrealistic expectations that I projected on to my own [situation]. I got stumped in the middle of writing the song because I felt that the infatuation I began the song with wasn’t parallel to the reality that I was falling for someone who almost wasn’t tangible. Accepting the anxiety and alarm bells this set off, subconsciously I indulged in a confrontation of self doubt and distrust with myself, ending the song with ‘I wish I never trusted you.’”
