Husband-wife duo the Know — Daniel Knowles and Jennifer Farmer — are back in all their fuzzy splendor, fixing their (shoe)gaze on the tenuousness of relationships that were tested, twisted and torn by the pandemic.
“Used to Be,” their first single since their 2020’s debut EP, “Wearetheknow,” opens with a My Bloody Valentine-esque sheet of guitar before ebbing and flowing in the airy spaces around Farmer’s vocals, which plaintively dissect a romance that has slipped away. Now, she sings, she has “trouble falling asleep / in the place where we used to be.”
“[When] the pandemic hit, people all around us were having their relationships tested in lockdown with significant others, some relationships came out stronger, some didn’t survive,” Farmer says. “And on a more universal scale, lots of people worldwide were dealing with a loss of normality, loss of connection with other people, suddenly not being able to do simple things like buy groceries, things we’d all taken for granted.”
Jason McBeth and Brianna Joy Chomer star in the video, which Farmer directed. The song is from the Know’s forthcoming second EP, details of which are yet to be revealed.
Since their previous release, Knowles has been busy in the studio, including co-producing Sharon Van Etten’s latest album, “We’ve Been Going About This All Wrong.”
