Mp3-pack: Hands, Princeton, Modern Time Machines

[A few new tunes from L.A. bands we had recently written about…]

Hands, “Come to Know” – Although their name has only gotten slightly easier to Google, Hands finally released their long-awaited “Massive Context” EP this week, via Small Plates. Based on their live shows (like this one), the six genre-melding and multi-textured songs are only the beginning of what the experimental quartet has to offer – but we’re happy to take what we can get. Add the psychedelically thumping “Come to Know” to your music library alongside their past singles “Magic Fingers” and “Warm Night Home.”

Princeton, “Andre” – Princeton returns with the third single off of their “Rememberance of Things to Come” LP (out now via Hit City U.S.A.), and whereas songs such as “To the Alps” have taken a liking to electro influences, “Andre” switches things up a bit. Jesse Kivel lets his brother Matt take the lead on vocals on this one, and that’s not the only difference. More subdued in energy but not without a strong song structure, the new single starts out sparse and grows with more orchestration until the strings become charmingly chaotic in the last measure.

Modern Time Machines, “Lucky Lady” – With “Rocketship,” we learned that Ben Golomb and the gang were not afraid to take their time for a strong comeback. With haunting harmonies, a mean bass line and some head-strong strings, “Lucky Lady” is one noisy, romantic hurricane for those who like their rock with intricate layers. Their record “Continuity Girl” is slated for a May 22 release and they continue their residency April 14 at Casey’s downtown.
