Caroline Polachek continues to kick through the boundaries of conventional pop in her debut solo album under her own name, “PANG,” released last Friday via Perpetual Novice. Freed to sink into her emotions and setting the pace without the pressures of a hot dance beat (see Chairlift), the highly-sought songwriter (Beyoncé, Solange, Charlie XCX, Beach Fossils, Travis Scott and more), producer and video director gives her own voice and visions not only room to breathe but flourish in her own quirky-cool millenial world.

Her latest single, “So Hot You’re Hurting My Feelings,” is about angsty fantasizing when both partners are drawn away geographically by their ambitious careers. The song is actually one of the more upbeat songs of the album. Lust seems to create its own diction, and elocution is the first noticeable signature of this song, emotions perhaps making it nearly impossible to speak. The setting of the video, directed by herself and Matt Copson, is a fantasy world, a dragon’s lair matching the heat of her desires. A fun, interpretive prance around the cave and whimsical special effects expressing her lust and longing counter the restrictions of distance, the aid of technology not necessarily making the situation any better (from “Don’t send me photos / You’re making it worse cuz’ your so hot / It’s hurting my feelings” to “Show me your banana a-nana-nana”).

Polachek kicks off a nine-date international tour beginning tonight at Zebulon (it’s sold out) and ending at the Fonda on Feb. 1.
